why people change careers?

Few people stay in the same career for their entire lives. Whether you’re feeling burned out, searching for greater purpose, or simply ready for a new challenge, changing careers has become more common than ever. After the pandemic, workers began focusing more on work-life balance, physical and mental health, being with family, flexibility, and overall personal well-being, no longer focusing solely on career advancement. This growing desire for meaning and purpose has prompted many reconsider their career paths and seek opportunities that were more aligned with their values and goals.

There could be several reasons why you may want to take a leap of faith and pursue a new career, and those reasons vary from person to person. Common factors include feeling stagnant in your current role, experiencing burnout, lacking motivation or opportunities for growth, or struggling to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Job dissatisfaction can also take a toll on your mental health, contributing to increased stress, anxiety, and depression. Leaving a familiar job and the security that comes with it can feel intimidating, but those fears are a natural part of stepping into something new. Be not afraid. Growth often begins where your comfort zone ends, and every meaningful career change starts with the courage to take that first step.

A career change can open the door to greater fulfillment, personal growth, and exciting new opportunities. By letting go of self-doubt, fear, and limiting beliefs, you create space to embrace new possibilities and move toward a more rewarding future.

remember your "why"

As you move through the career change process, remember what motivated you to take this step. Keeping your “why” at the forefront can help you overcome challenges and remain committed to your long-term goals.

I remember discussing my decision to change careers with my husband and reflecting on the reasons behind my decision. During moments of uncertainty, revisiting my "why" helped me stay focused on my goals and reminded me why the transition was worth pursuing.

For me, this process also involved taking time to reflect, pray, and discern the direction I was being called to pursue. Those moments of reflection helped me better understand my strengths, values, and the kind of work where I could make a meaningful impact.

Setting goals and milestones is important because it creates a clear vision for your new career. Start by creating both short- and long-term goals, write down what you are passionate about, and identify your talents, abilities, and strengths.

Every step you take brings you closer to the future you want to create. Invest in yourself by developing new skills and seeking new experiences. Change doesn't happen overnight, but if you trust the process and believe in yourself, you will gain the confidence and skills needed to reach your goals. Believe in you and the timing.

exploring new opportunities

Finding volunteer opportunities while you still have your current job can be a great way to explore new possibilities. It gives you the chance to step outside your comfort zone, gain experience, and see whether a different career path is something you would truly enjoy. Being open to new experiences can provide valuable insight and confidence as you consider your next steps.

Another valuable step is connecting with professionals already working in the field that interests you. They can share their experiences, offer advice, provide insight into the day-to-day realities of the profession, and help you better understand the skills and qualifications needed to succeed.

There are many practical ways to begin preparing for a career transition, even before leaving your current position.

Consider taking one or more of these steps:

      • Shadow someone working in the field you’re interested in.
      • Take an online course to build new knowledge and skills.
      • Update your LinkedIn profile to reflect your interests and accomplishments.
      • Attend networking events to build professional connections.
      • Create a portfolio that showcases your work.
      • Volunteer to gain hands-on experience in your desired field.
      • Seek guidance from mentors who can offer advice and encouragement.
      • Build an emergency fund before leaving your current job to help ease the financial transition.

Many of these strategies helped me gain the confidence, experience, and skills I needed as I transitioned into a completely different career.

my career transition journey

If I could go back, I would not have changed anything about my career path. I am grateful for my decision to start with civil engineering, but I knew in my heart that it was not where I was meant to stay. Over time, I learned that my identity was not defined by my profession. Engineering was an important part of my journey, but it was not the only thing that shaped who I was or what I could become.

I always wanted to serve and help others, and my personal experiences opened my eyes to new possibilities. They eventually led me toward clinical social work while also opening the door to opportunities in instructional design, a field where I could combine my creativity, problem-solving skills, and passion for helping others learn and grow.

In my first career, I learned many valuable lessons and developed skills that taught me to think outside the box. I am truly thankful for those experiences, as they shaped who I am today. I have always been a self-learner and a creative problem-solver, which helped me embrace new challenges and continue growing. As I explored a new career path, I began volunteering at a nonprofit organization and later had the opportunity to work at Florida State University, where I became a graduate assistant. During that time, I also began learning Articulate Storyline and developing skills in instructional design.

embracing change

If you’ve been thinking about making a career change, don’t ignore that feeling. Take one small step this week, whether it’s researching a new field, talking with someone who inspires you, or signing up for a class. Every career transformation begins with a single decision to move forward.

Now in my mid-40s, I continue to learn, grow, and challenge myself in new ways every day. My journey has taught me that pursuing a different path, developing new skills, and working toward a career that aligns with your passions and goals is always possible.

Looking back, every step of my journey from civil engineering to clinical social work has taught me valuable lessons about resilience, growth, and purpose. If you’re considering a career change, trust yourself, stay focused on your “why,” and remember that each small step can lead to opportunities you never imagined. The first step doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to move you forward. Have courage, Believe in Yourself and Be not Afraid.
